After the miserable defeat of the touring Indian Cricket Team at the hands of the Aussies in the first two Tests, India managed to draw the remaining two Tests, thus eventually losing the four-match series to Australia by 0-2.  Consequently Australia took the Border-Gavaskar trophy home, the fate of the series was, however, clear after the 2^nd Test.
