DETERMINATION OF PERCENTAGE OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE

The determination of percentage of sodium hydroxide in the given mixture by volumetric method. 8 grams of sodium hydroxide and sodium chloride had been dissolved to form a solution. The basic principle of this experiment is that it is basically are acid base titration.

Standard solution of hydrochloric acid will neutralize sodium hydroxide in the given mixture of solution of sodium hydroxide and sodium chloride. Sodium chloride will not react with hydrochloric acid solution. The main procedure of this experiment is that, take the mixture of solution in the glass tube using a glass funnel and fix this vertically in the stand.

Remove the final and noticed the initial reading of the glass tube. Take 10 centimeter cube of hydrochloric acid solution in the titration flask on conical flask by means of a pipette. Add one or two drop of methyl as an indicator into it.

And mixtures solution from the glass tube drop by drop into the conical flask with constant shaking tell the color of solution becomes light pink. Note the final reading of the glass tube. The difference between final and initial reading of the glass tube will be the volume of the mixture solution used to neutralize 10 centimeter cube of hydrochloric acid solution .

Repeat the same procedure to get at least three to four readings. There are some precautions which can be remember throughout the practical. Always use neat and clean apparatus. The apparatus must be washed with distilled water for . The advantages of using distilled water throughout the practical because it gives correct and accurate result.

This procedure is known has acid base titration which is used for finding the percentage composition of sodium hydroxide by volumetric method. We can use this procedure of acid base titration in so many practicals and by using this procedure we can made so many products.
