Today, the character Chhota Bheem is a phenomenon with a massive following. Every kid in India and around the world today knows each of the characters in Chhota Bheem – Raju, Chutki, Jaggu and Kaliya. That is what makes Chhota Bheem special. My 4 year old son is a great fan of Chhota Bheem and even I started liking the character while accompanying him. But how many of us know the Father of Chhota Bheem?
The creator is Rajiv Chilaka, Founder & MD of Green Gold Animations. Rajiv started their journey in 2004 with a team of 25-30 people and they had already started making shows like Krishna and Vikram Betaal which were also being made by a lot of other productions. But, then, he bagged a contract with cartoon Network and he had this overwhelming desire to create a show that no one else was making or was even, remotely thinking of creating. He wanted the show to be one that would be loved by all and that’s when he came up with the idea of Chhota Bheem, one of the most loved cartoon characters today.
Chhota Bheem came to his mind because of Mahabharata and he was trying to portray Bheem as a small kid so that children would enjoy it. This concept materialized and it did take a long time to develop to sell. But then in 2007, they finally sold the concept to Pogo and their feedback was good.
Rajib had a deep desire to create an Indian superhero that everyone could connect with. As a child, he had always wanted to meet his own superheroes but never got a chance. And that’s when he thought that India needed its own share of superheroes. That’s why he decided to create an Indian hero who would connect with both, adults and children, alike. Chhota Bheem connects on a traditional level too. It has culture, values and morals, so parents encourage their kids to watch the show. It is simple storytelling at its best. It conveys a strong message and upholds Indian values and kids connect with every character in Chhota Bheem.
