Durand line conflict

Posted on at

The Durand line is reffered to the 2640 kilometer long border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. It was established in 1893 after an agreement between Mortimer Durand of British India and Amer Abdur Rahman khan of Afghanistan for fixing the respective spheres of influence as well as improving diplomatic relations and trade.

Durand line has been the area of interest for the people of Afghanistan which they claim was signed for 100 years and beyond that it has to be our property. However it has been marked in the world map as the western border of Pakistan. There are conflicting statements from people of both the sides and the people of Afghanistan dont recognize it as a border. For most parts of the Durand line there lives Pashtun and baloch tribes on both sides of the border who speak the same language on both the sides. There has been a rise of tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan where Afghanistan claims that Pakistan has tried to establish a wall inside Afghan territory in Goshta district and as a result ,heavy fighting from both the sides took place. The wall was destroyed initially by the Afghan side.

However Afghans claims the Durand line as a disputed area and they want it to be adressed on international level ,they claim that the agreement was for 100 years from 1893 onwards and the agreement has expired .The map of Afghanistan look different before 1893 as some parts of now Pakistan were included in the map.The recent conflict is alarming as it might turn in to a bigger conflict.

The Durand line conflict questions has not reached the United Nations ,which could play a major role in settling the disputes between Afghanistan and Pakistan.we wish there is a truce on this issue between both the sides because we are neighbours and we are not in a situation to get it to a conflict which could further escalate violence and the already rising amout of hatred amongst the Afghans for Pakistan.
