Last month, the Council of the European Union adopted conclusions on multi-purpose cash-based humanitarian assistance, recognizing this type of aid as an efficient and effective response to humanitarian needs. Action Against Hunger contributed to the review and development of the ten common principles for multi-purpose cash-based assistance, which were endorsed by the Council and will serve as a guide to member states in designing, funding, and implementing responses to humanitarian crises.

Cash assistance is quick to deliver, cost-effective, and provides people in need with greater choice and flexibility. As one of five organizations in the Cash Learning Partnership (CaLP) steering committee, Action Against Hunger promotes cash transfer to provide aid in times of crisis. Action Against Hunger has implemented cash interventions in several countries during emergencies to provide food, hygiene, shelter items, and other materials with consideration of specific local needs. In response to waves of displacement due to violence in northern Nigeria, we launched the largest electronic transfer project in the country, supporting internally displaced people with cash transfers and food vouchers. With this agreement, we look forward to helping even more people around the world with this impactful form of assistance.
