ICT verdict: Habiganj's Mohibur to die, brothers get life term

The International Crimes Tribunal awarded death penalty to one, and jailed two others for life term for their crimes against humanity in Habiganj in 1971.

Mohibur Rahman of Habiganj has been sentenced to death and his younger sibling Mujibur Rahman and cousin Abdur Razzak awarded life term on Wednesday.

On 25 May 2015, the ICT prosecution submitted formal charge against the brothers, bringing four charges of crimes against humanity. On 29 September 2015, the ICT-1 indicted the trio. The tribunal on 11 May kept the case waiting for judgment after completing hearing.

The trio is accused of raising a gang against the freedom fighters in Baniachang upazila in Habiganj and establishing a camp in the locality. They allegedly killed two freedom fighters, raped two women, confined and tortured an unarmed civilian, and carried out arson attack and looting in the house of Maj Gen (retd) M A Rob, the deputy commander-in-chief during the War of Liberation.

Mohibur, former chairman of Khagaura union parishad under Baniachong upazila of Habiganj, and Mozibur, the incumbent chairman of the same union, were arrested on February 10, and Razzak was arrested on 19 May 2015.
