In September 2014, AIADMK chief and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was sentenced to four years in prison by a Special Court in Karnataka in the disproportionate assets case and a fine of Rs.100-crore was also imposed on her. She had to step down from the Chief Minister's office as a consequence of the conviction.
