Northeast India jolted by tremor.

A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 on Richter scale struck northeast India early today at the Myanmar-India border region at 4.37 amThe epicentre of the earthquake was at a depth of 17 km below the ground at Tamenglong which is located 33 kilometers from Imphal in Manipur.  Tremors were also felt in other parts of northeast India apart from Bangladesh and West Bengal. Panicked residents were found fleeing into the streets.  At least 8 people had been killed and another 100 injured due to the earthquake. The injured have been admitted at state government hospital JNIMS in Imphal. An aftershock of magnitude 3.6 was felt at about 9:27 am. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force have been rushed from Guwahati to areas affected by the quake.  Further details are yet to be available.
