The Best of Film Annex: Women Empowerment

Posted on at

I make it a habit to skim the news whenever I open my web browser.

Today I headed over to Film Annex's The Annex Press where I became absorbed in an article by Women's Annex about the recent interview with filmmaker Nilu Shurpa by Film Annex Creative Director Erin Gufidan.

in the interview, Sherpa spoke of working in the male-dominated film industry (Nepal specific) and her short film KAGAJ, a 5-minute film (watch below) about several children's search for knowledge through discarded papers. Unable to attend school, the children gather these pieces of paper to teach themselves English.

The ideal film for someone who wrote a blog post about Lisa Simpson being her role model.

In this blog post, I would like to highlight my favorite articles about women empowerment featured here on Film Annex. Clean cut and true, these writers will leave you feeling no doubt for the issues discussed.  I feel like organizing a sit-in.

Can I get a 'Huzzah' for these magnificent blog posts?!

  • I may have to take a page from the book of social media coordinator, Jennifer Bourne. She is an active supporter of women empowerment, or as she calls it, lady empowerment, through the use social networking. I know I need pointers, but you could also benefit from her article about women and social media and the surprising statistics of male versus female domination of social media.
  • A channel dedicated to woman empowerment as well as a place for spreading the word of the efforts of Film Annex's involvement in such a movement now exists! Grab your fellow ladies, ladies. We've got some work to do. First stops: Central & south Asia and Afghanistan.  Read more about the new channel here in an article by Fereshteh Forough, one of the founders of the Afghan Citadel Software Company (ACSC) and the director of the company's Herat branch.
  • I have written my fair share of articles highlighting the obstacles women in Afghanistan face when pursuing an education. But in an article written by blogger Rachna Srivastava Parmar has to be my favorite when it comes to laying out the issues one by one.  Society versus personal thirst for knowledge. No one could have said it any better.
  • Want to read more of lady empowerment by Jennifer Bourne, read her thoughts on the magic helping hand that is social media, as well as thought leadership. Lady Gaga is her example of being a lady with a lot of power. Well said!
  • Film Annex's CEO himself (Fransesco Rulli) is the go-to guy for knowing about the struggle of women empowerment throughout Asia and Afghanistan. One of his most recent articles discusses the recent launching of Women's Annex and the efforts made by Film Annex and its partners for women's rights. Check it out here.
  • I am slightly biased toward this last article since, well,  I wrote it. In it I discuss the issues facing Afghan women and how they are challenging it. It's always good to know the facts,
