The First UK Singles Chart

Posted on at

On 14th November 1952, the British music newspaper, New Musical Express, was the first British paper to publish a singles chart.

The newspaper, which was founded in March of that year, later moved to a magazine format, and has since mostly moved online, beginning in 1996, becoming the largest standalone music site in the world. It is probably better known by its initials, NME.

The first chart included singles by Vera Lynn and Nat "King" Cole. Interesting for a magazine that later become greatly associated with punk rock.
