"Role of Jocasta"
jocasta is the queen of thebes and wife of Oedipus.She is also Oedipus mother.But in her ignorence of this fact she marris him and bears four children.Jocasta has a brief but important/ esential role to play in the drama.She appears on the stag just after Oedipus has had a quarrel with her brother Crion.And has declared his decission to punish Creon with death.The very first speech of Jocasta shows her to be a moderate kind of person with a balance mind.She rebukes both men for fighting in public and persuades them to act rationally.


She scolds both of them for quarreling over private matters when the city is passing through a criticle place of its existence.She calls upon her husband to go into the palace and advises her brother Creon to go home.On knowing the cause of quarrel she appels to Oedipus to believe Creon's assertion of innocence and not to distract Creon's oath.


She pleads for Creon to know from Oedipus why he has develop such a hatred against Creon.Thus from the begining.She comes accros a strong women .She is a women who is ready to speakout her mind and attempts to prophecy conflict.Her character is presented as that of a person who does not hesitate to shake off the hold of traditional beliefs.She very openly say that expresses her disbeliefe in prophecies and divine oracles.Then Oedipus tells her that her brother Creon has been using the Prophet Terisias as his tool , she unhesitatingly advises her husband bot to attach any importance to prophecy or soothsayers.She expresses the view that no human being possesses the power of deviation.
As she says to Oedipus:
"If it is a question of soothsayers, I tell you that you will find no man whose craft gives knowledge of the unknownable"
She says that she has not seen any of them fufilled , therefore she does not trust them.
