Travelling to Varanasi

Varanasi is an ancient city in East Uttar Pradesh which is situated on the banks of the holy river Ganges. It is one of the most important holy cities for the Hindus and is so popular for its temples that are often known as the city of temples. Travelling to Varanasi actually make one realize how rich the Indian culture is.

Major tourist spots

The city is famous for the Kashi Vishwanath temple which has the deity of lord Shiva and attracts millions of devotees from all across the country. The city of Varanasi was known as Kashi in the older days. The city is also famous for its 'Ghats' and the aarti or the evening prayers which are performed across all the 'Ghats' simultaneously. The 'aarti' is so beautiful that it attracts tourists both from India and abroad, Sankat mochan temple and Durga temple are two of the other major temples in the city,

Varanasi also boasts of one of the premiere universities of the country, Banaras Hindu University had been established by pandit Madan Mohan Malviya and has one of the largest and amazing university campuses in Asia with many famous alumni. Because of its innumerable temples and the numerous ghats, and the river Ganges, it is a very popular travelling destination for Indians well as foreigner tourists.

How to get there?

Travelling to Varanasi is convenient as it is very well connected through railways with many major cities of the country. It is also connected to other parts of country by a well connected network of roads.

Sarnath

Sarnath, which is just 13 kms away from the holy city of Varanasi is a must visit if one is travelling to Varanasi. Sarnath is situated on the confluence of the river Ganga and the river Gomti and is the place where Buddha us said to have received his enlightenment. The city of Sarnath also has the famous deer park which is a very attractive tourist spot. Hence, because of its relation to lord Buddha, it is one of the holy places for the Buddhists.

Shopping

One must not forget to do some shopping when one is travelling to Varanasi. The city is famous for its 'Banarasi sarees' which are world famous and favored by Indian women during the wedding for their intricate and gorgeous works.
