An Afghan Perspective - 60 Minutes on CBS - Tragedy in Newtown - December 16, 2012

Today is  17 December, as I promised every Monday I will publish a blog about 60 Minutes show and give my  comments as an Afghan point of view. Last night reports were about: Tragedy in Newtown and Costa Concordia: Salvaging a shipwreck

Tragedy in Newtown:

Last week on Friday 14, 2012, 26 people that includes 20 children and 6 adults of Sandy Hook Elementary School of Newtown Connecticut where killed by in a massacre tragedy.

I know it is hard to imagine when you wake up in the morning with many wishes  to go to school with friends and enjoy being with them and learning new things, but it will never happen to you again anymore.

Last night , I watched the  memorial of those who were killed in this shooting live on CBS where Barak Obama, US president gave a speech and mentioned that, since his presidency it is the fourth time that they face with such a tragedy. Although it is not US but any part of the world suffer from such an unbelievable tragedies for schools kids, though they are a bit different than each others where Afghanistan is in the same path as them.

However in Afghanistan mostly school girls will be affected by attacks at school or on the way to go to school. They face with many risks while they are dreaming to have a good education to study but we have numerous examples of Acid attacks ad poisoning  their water.

For Afghan girls it becomes a part or their daily life when they leave home to school either there will be another anti-education attack to their schools or their individuals, they carry all the concerns and worries with themselves but in a hope that they are the generation who can build the future of their country and no one else.

since 2001 when the Taliban regime collapsed, and women had a very dark educational period that time when they could study just at home and hidden until now still women are under pressure while they are studying, specially those who are in southern and eastern part of Afghanistan. This anti-educational attacks becomes a culture to avoid girls to continue their educations. As an example on April 17, 150 girls were poisoned in Takhar province in Afghanistan.

But why always girls should be the target?! In my idea they are the innocent part of the society, in a male dominated society like Afghanistan to ignore women and separate them from social activities is not a big deal. Those who poison girls know that they have the responsibility of being a mother to train and educate future generation of Afghanistan, thus well educated mothers will grow wise children who hate war, corruption, injustice, bomb blasting, massacre, they wont let them to be in power again and these anti-education attacks would be a good reason for them.

But whenever one door is closed, the next door is going to be open and that  is building Internet classroom in Afghanistan with educational software "Examer" and a social media curriculum that connect Afghan school girls to the world which they  can raise their voices outside of Afghanistan.

For me, it is no matter where you are and who you are , the most important thing is to get the best  thing what you want out of what you have in your hands and thats why we make Afghan girls' dream into reality to sit in Internet classroom in Afghanistan with a unforgettable smile for the future.
