China and family planning

China’s Communist Party leaders have actually been extremely proud of their one child policy and they believe this has helped in controlling the population very well. There is a lot of criticism however which is focused on saying that it has spawned decades of the various forced abortions and infanticide coupled with child trafficking.

China claims that this policy has actually averted about 400 million births and this has resultantly saved a lot of food resources and has helped people out of poverty. On the other hand, critics believe that this has only lead to only a generation of brats and has led to a re-enforcement of a cultural preference for heirs being male mostly. This is because if parents know that they can have only one child, then they mostly opt for a boy because they believe that the boy can take care of them better.

“The parents put all their eggs in one basket” Huang Zheng explained. Born in 1980 he says that,

“This generation carries the burden of too much pressure. But it has already become the norm, because everyone is in the same situation.”

Those couples which want more than one child will be required to pay a fine and sometimes are even forced to abort their child. Last year it was announced that millions of families would be allowed to have two children. The old rules said that urban couples were permitted to have a second child if both the parents did not have any siblings and rural were allowed if their first child was a girl. Things are different now and urban couples are permitted to have a second child provided one of the parents has no sibling
