US Athletes Name US Judoka Myles Porter Their Flag Bearer for Closing Ceremonies of Parapan American Games in Guadalajara

November 19, 2011 - A tremendous honor was bestowed upon a U.S. judoka today, Myles Porter (NYAC), when his fellow U.S. athletes across all sports at the 2011 Parapan American Games voted him to be their flag bearer at the closing ceremonies of this prestigious athletic event.

Porter, who won the gold medal yesterday for USA Judo at the Games, will carry the Stars and Stripes of the United States of America, leading all his teammates into the arena at Sunday’s ceremony.

"This is a tremendous honor," said Jose H. Rodriguez, CEO of USA Judo. "Myles has demonstrated not only that he is a remarkable athlete but also that he is a leader, a young man with a big heart and warm personality. He is perfect for this duty and we are all very proud of him, and we are very proud that a judoka was selected to carry our flag."

Porter threw ippon seoi nage in all his matches yesterday, first against Argentina, then to best Canada, Brazil and Cuba to take the gold medal. For complete results and brackets, go to the PARAPAN WEBSITE.

The Parapan American Games are a multi-sport event, like the Olympic Games, for athletes with disabilities in the Western Hemisphere. And with competition in judo coming from power nations in the sport like Brazil and Cuba, it is close in athletic prowess to what athletes will encounter next year in London.

Former NYAC Judo Player, Ronda Rousey won her 4th straight MMA fight defeating 145- pounder Julia Budd in the co-main event of Strikeforce Challengers 20 on Saturday in Las Vegas. In all four fights, Ronda has defeated her opponents with arm-bar submissions. Here are links to the article in USA Today and a video of the fight (all 39 seconds of it).
