Dick Gregory on Americanism

Well, that's the idea, right? People want democracy, so they steal it from their leaders, as during the Arab Spring. Occasionally, as in Libya, we help them, and I don't see a problem with that. I think the way that the US promotes democracy today vs, say, during the Cold War, is significantly different. The Cold War was an attempt by two ideologies to spread their conflicting views, resulting in proxy wars. That I don't think is a good idea. I don't think we should be going into countries that didn't ask for us and overthrowing their governments, but I don't see a problem with helping out when a country is trying to overthrow a corrupt dictator and install a Democracy. Also, if we're in the country because we're at war with them, and we overthrow their government, setting up a Democracy before we leave is the responsible thing to do, whether the war was just or not.
