Facts on the leaning tower of Pisa

The campanile (bell tower) or the Leaning Tower of Pisa is shared by the Campo dei Miracoli and Cathedral. Even when it would stand straight up, it was stated as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. According to the Greek writer Herodotus, this structure and design of this tower is very similar to the structure of Tower of Babel. The leaning tower has around seven bells; it counts about 294 steps to a musical scale.

Construction:

The construction of this tower started in the year 1173. The tilt in the structure was visible after the construction of the third layer itself in the year 1178. The construction of the tower has stopped for around 199 years due to the war of Pisa with neighboring city Florence and other reasons. In the year 1372 its construction began again.

Fixing the tilt:

At present since the tilt is so visible, however in those days, the architects could not find out that the reason behind the tilt was inadequate foundations plummeting in the weak subsoil. Numerous efforts took place to address this issue, but the tilt could not be corrected. But because of this tilt, this monument holds a special place in the eyes of people and is among the most famous tourist destinations.
