'Falling Making of' Released

Posted on at

As promised this week brings the release of the making of for my last short ‘Falling’ I think it gives a great insight in to what goes in to a production. You can view the making of here now and don’t forget to like and share.

So I just really want to go in detail a little more about the shoot and talk about some of the challenges we faced. Lighting was a big challenge, the day was constantly moving from cloudy to sunny. Natasha our actress had to catch a plain to Italy so had to leave no later than half 4. It was very important that we shot everything so we had to shoot all the stuff with her in and the two shots first. However the later the day, the better the sky, which caused a problem with the shots matching up. Luckily a lot of the takes I used of Natasha were not too difficult to match up.

Sound was difficult because of the wind. This was not just the obvious problems, it was more the fact that the wind was blowing the diffusion paper we had clipped to the light which would rattle through the take meaning we would have to go back and start again. The wind was so strong that all the lighting stands had to have numerous sand bags attached to stop them blowing over. I believe my soundman had a boom and then two radio mics so that we could switch between all of them in post to give me the best sound.

It seemed to take us a long time to get started on this shoot. The initial setup I think was a challenge. With that in mind we were on the top floor and the lifts weren’t working so it did take some time to climb the several flights of stairs over and over bringing the kit to the roof. Because only I had been to the location with the actors, I think it was a challenge to get the look that I wanted with the lighting and filters, however once we had it we seemed to pick up the speed.

I think every shoot has challenges that you must overcome because that what teaches us and makes us better as filmmakers. The next shoot will have a different script, location, actors and will host a whole different range of problems that I will have to overcome, but what would a film shoot be without challenges.

If you liked this making of then check out some earlier ones I did for  ‘I’ll Call You Back’
