In late 1937, over a period of six weeks, Imperial Japanese Army forces brutally murdered hundreds of thousands of people–including both soldiers and civilians–in the Chinese city of Nanjing. The Nanjing Massacre, means The Rape of Nanjing. As 20,000 to 80,000 women were sexually assaulted. It was an episode of mass murder and mass rape committed by Japanese troops against Nanjing during second Sino-Japanese War. This started by the 13th December 1937. A big number of people died in this. However, exact number has not been achieved. Because of the Japanese military records on the killings were deliberately destroyed. Even many of the records were kept secret shortly after the surrender of Japan in 1945. In December 2007, the PRC government published the names of 13,000 people who were killed by Japanese troops in the Nanking Massacre. The event remains a contentious political issue, as various aspects of it have been disputed. In addition, some people claimed that the massacre has been either exaggerated or wholly fabricated for propaganda purposes. The Japanese government has admitted to the acts of killing of a large number of, non-combatants, looting and other violence committed by the Imperial Japanese Army after the fall of Nanking
