PHYSICS CHARACTERISTICS OF SOUND

 CHARACTERISTICS OF SOUND:

There are few characteristics of sound by which we can distinguish between two sounds. These characteristics are:

  1. Loudness             2. Intensity         3. Pitch                 4. Quality      Here we will discuss only 1st i.e. Loudness.

LOUDNESS OF SOUND:

It is the property by which loud and faint sound are distinguish.

It is also defined as magnitude of hearing sensation produced by sound. It depends upon:

  1. Area of vibrating body:

Larger the area of vibrating body louder will be the sound. For example the school bell has large area as compare to the house bell, similarly small drum (dholki) produce less sound as compare to large drum (dholak).

  1. Amplitude of vibrating body:

If the amplitude of the vibrating body is large the sound produced will be loud. For example the drum produces loud sound when its membrane is struck strongly but produces faint sound when strike gently.

Distance from vibrating body:

If the distance between the source of sound and listener increases or decreases the loudness of the sound will be increase or decrease accordingly.
