The adventure of a borrowed Go Pro

Posted on at

So the Go Pro HD Hero.

I’m probably “Late to the Party” about the Go Pro but non the less  it’s awesome.

Small, light, and very very portable. Whilst on holiday in Florida an old friend of mine introduced me to the camera. He isn’t a film maker but he likes filming when he rides on his motorcycle. The adventues (or misadventures if you prefer) that take place whilst he’s riding are intriguing, perhaps there is a future film in there *wink* *wink*.

Anyhow I digress, So he introduced me to this FULL HD, 60p, fit in your pocket, 300 dollar camera. To be it’s almost too good to be true, but as the say the truth shall set you free.

We did a few random night tests, went into shops and filmed people. And basically messed around like some sort of Jackass Jr. film crew (okay maybe not that extreme).

It’s a perfect Holiday camera, especially with it’s water proof casing. You can take it anywhere, hold it anywhere and most importantly HIDE it anywhere. Fly on the wall has never been so easy and with an internal microphone, the audio is useable.

It records in a 4:2:0 H.264 mp4 format, which is basically the same as DSLRs, so programs such as Premiere CS6 handle it with relative easy (even on a 5 year old Macbook Pro).

Only Limitations with it is that we didn’t have some a monitor for it, so it was very much shoot and hope for the best, I know you can get a back LCD for it at the time. However we still were able to get consistently able to get usable footage.

Filming with this camera is a different philosophy, due to the compressed nature of the codec, you can record over 2 and a half hours in 1080p at 30 frames a second, and 4 HOURS in 720p 60p frames a second. All on a regular $40.00 SD card that you can buy from almost anywhere.

With that in mind you can keep it rolling and rolling, as you can catch so many of the small tidbits in an everyday life. Obviously this is an editors nightmare, but this is many a documentarians dream.

Anyways I’m digressing big time.

So we decided to go the WORLD FAMOUS Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay, Florida for a day of adrenaline filled leisure. Decided to sneak a GO PRO Hero.

The results are below. Enjoy

So it’s small, easy to use, and can go anywhere. And it’s really cheap.

What’s there not to like about the Go Pro Hero
