The Making & Lessons - Bitter Sweet (short film)

LOOKING BACK AT BITTER SWEET

I started my film career with my friend Jaydeep. We used to make films, have fun and what not. My younger cousin brothers, Soumyendu and Sourendu were always enthused about our films. They always used to nag me about making a film exclusively with them. Every time I visited their place they tried to charge me up. But I failed to come up with a satisfactory idea.

One afternoon an idea struck me. I confronted my brothers with my idea. Luckily they got convinced. I took my uncle's point-n-shoot digital camera and started shooting right off. The whole film was going on in my mind during the shoot so it took very less time to finish. The shoot was over within 3 hours and the performances of my brothers were noteworthy.

The post-production process was hectic as I didn't have any professional software to edit with and my computer also had a slow processor. I edited with the Windows Movie Maker software. After finishing the first cut I added the background score to the film with my Guitar. The intro music part was first done with my Guitar. But I thought that the sound of Piano can blossom the innocence of the film more prominently during the opening scene. Though I ended the film with a Guitar instrumental.

Anyway, I finished the final cut and distributed some copies among my friends. To my surprise everyone loved it. Frankly speaking, there were no external lights and no special effects used in Bitter Sweet for which I was a bit sceptical about the feedback from the viewers. But fortunately most of the people liked it, except a few.

There are some things which I learned while making this film and I want to share with you.

  1. The video quality, external lights & special effects doesn't matter at all. It is the quality of the story, the acting and the flow of the narrative in the film which can connect to the viewers.

  2. The more your limitations, the more you get room for creativity.

  3. Continuity in editing is a must to create that smooth effect in a film. It is a boost to the storyline.

  4. Background score should be well perceived.

The theme of the film : When innumerable relationships in the world are at stake, this is what I thought of.
