Carving of Mount Rushmore was not easy. An egg-shaped formed size was dynamited first to take away sheets of excess stone for each roughen skull. This Egg was separated into three sections, first for eyebrow line, second for the nose line, and a third for the chin part. After a suggestion point, such as a nose lines of holes were drilled from 2 to 6 feet deep. Extra rock was removed with the help of small dynamites. The holes' depths eventually formed the complete "skin. Lastly, the exterior was smoothened with a procedure called bumping .To make a white exterior as smooth. Around 450,000 tons of rocks were removed.

The work on Mount Rushmore was Borglum's way to protect a symbol of a enormous national model.
