In Pakistan, wheat is being grown in typical semi-arid climate, which is characterized by high temperature during crop growth and also peculiar climatic conditions coupled with rain-fed cultivation of the crop leads to the lower productivity. Pakistan is although counted as an extensive irrigated country along with United States, Indonesia, Soviet Union, Mexico and Egypt, yet in its dry regions water is not sufficient even to provide initial requirements of agricultural crops. This deficiency retards not only the growth of the plants but also results in poor harvests thereby causing a great financial loss to the poor tiller of the soil.

In Pakistan, the total cultivable area is 34.54 Mha (39.3 % of total land area), of which 23.38 Mha areas is under cultivation. An area of approximately 4.22 Mha (4.8 % of the total land area) is under forest cover .On average in Pakistan agriculture sector contributes about 25% to gross domestic product (GDP) and almost 44% of the country's working force is being engaged directly or indirectly. The largest cropped area is under wheat cultivation, which is over 8.6 Mha. (GoP, 2012-13)
