Early last week I started conversations on my Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn pages in regards to the growing popularity we are seeing in ‘crowdfunding’ creative projects. Here in Australia, one of the most popular means of crowdfunding is through online platform Pozible. I have read a number of success stories and am very interesting in trying it myself; however I am wondering if this success is truly Pozible?

For those of you who are wondering what crowdfunding actually entails, Pozible defines it as a ‘community-building tool for creative projects and ideas - it was developed to help people raise funds, realise their aspirations and make great things possible’. What I am wondering though, is how us filmmakers can differentiate our projects and make them appealing to prospective ‘crowdfunders’?
Pozible also requires project creators to set target amount and deadline to achieve this amount. The twist however, is that if the nominated target is not met by the deadline, the pledges are not processed. This results in the project creator receiving no funds. It is therefore clear that an achievable target must be set otherwise the work in developing the campaign and promotion efforts will go to waste. I am curious what other people see as an achievable target for independent film? Has anyone reading ever attempted a crowdfunding campaign or have you been considering it? I am very interested to hear of any opinions or experiences – both the good and the bad.
