Live Drawings at Décover Magazine's MONSTRA Show

Posted on at

Décover Magazine is a local Montreal publication that keeps its fingers on the pulse of local painters, sculptors, and mixed media artists and releases new editions every two months. They throw an art exhibition and party for each magazine launch. Last night was their MONSTRA show to correspond with Halloween, and it was costumes required. The Décover team asked me to lend my live drawing skills to event to entertain and give me a chance to sell my drawings. I drew on 18x24 bond paper with the usual coloured soft chalk pastels.

Catwoman was the first person to pose. She was one of the artists exhibiting a painting of a Frankenstein priest.

The next was a really cute costume, "Kennedy For President". So classy with the white gloves. She tried to buy it with her debit card, but I couldn't figure out how to do it on my Square reader, because I'm used to accepting credit only.

There were two drawings that I did at this point in the night, that I sold and forgot to take photos of. One was a red demon with horns coming out of his forehead. The other was this grey robed, intricately clad futuristic monk.

Elf God Warrioress. She made this whole costume herself. It was crazy. So intricate and detailed. Loved the scull helmet and the markings on her face. She bought it.

Lady Vader. She was part of the same crew of friends as the Elf. She had these crazy metallic android dreadlocks coming out of her head.

So at this point in the night, the vibe was really nice. A lot of people appreciated the live aspect, and people were getting in line to get one.

Boy Wonder. Music was really loud, and he couldn't stand still. He kept dancing and two-stepping and flexing his arms.

Turns out this guy is studying animation at Cégep du Vieux-Montréal. He walked up to me and requested a pose like this, cig in mouth, gun pressed up against the side of the head. He picked the pose, the length, he specified a gesture drawing and only black and white.

These guys were super fun to drawing too. I decided to continue working in black only because it was that time of the night and I was getting tired.
