This is the second part of the previous post "The Benefits of Baking Soda for the Hair, Skin, and Body [Part I]"

In the previous post, we discussed what baking soda is and the first five health benefits of baking soda.

Just to give you a brief recap of what was discussed previously, baking soda also known as sodium bicarbonate is a natural compound found in the wild, it is crystalline in appearance and is ground into fine powder for easier use. It is an alkaline compound that when mix with acidic substances creates a chemical reaction that will produce carbon dioxide gas. This gas is what makes it popular as a leavening agent in cooking and baking foodstuffs.

In the previous post, we discussed how baking soda can be used to treat acne and pimples, whiten teeth, helps relieve sunburns, improve uneven skin tones, and remove body odor.

 Here we will discuss the second part of "The Benefits of Baking Soda for the Hair, Skin, and Body".

 

✧Helps Remove Dandruff✧

Dandruff, those small white flakes that fall from your hair. They can be a source of embarrassment and discomfort.

Baking soda helps clean the scalp and removes excess sebum produced by the scalp, it is a natural antiseptic which can help treat fungal infections that causes dandruff. Using baking soda regularly will help balance the scalp's pH level allowing the scalp to produce less oil. Dandruff can be difficult to get rid of, but it can be done with proper and regular care.

With these natural home remedies, pretty soon dandruff will be a thing of the past.

  1. Rub 1 tablespoon of baking soda onto your wet hair and scalp. Wait for a minute, then rinse it out thoroughly with water. Do this once a week only.
  2. Mix 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice with 1 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. After the fizzing stops massage it on to your scalp for 2 to 3 minutes and then rinse your hair with water. Follow this remedy once a week only to keep your scalp free from dandruff.
  3. Mix 2 teaspoons baking soda with 2-3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar. Massage into the scalp for a minute or two. rinse hair with water. Repeat this twice a week for dandruff free hair.
  4. Mix 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda with 1 tablespoon honey, and 1 tablespoon coconut oil. Apply this mixture on the scalp and leave it on for 20-30 minutes. Rinse your hair with water. Repeat this twice a week for a wonderful dandruff free scalp.

Baking soda is an alkaline compound in nature and it has a drying effect, but don't worry, after some time and a few washes later, your scalp will soon produce natural oil which will leave your hair healthier, softer, and dandruff free.

 

✧Treats Bad Odor and Oily Hair✧

With the change in the weather, smelly and oily hair becomes a problem. As more and more people becoming more prone to this problem, we got to ask "What causes this condition?" Oily hair can be caused by a number of factors, the most common sources of this condition are:

  • Using products with harsh chemicals.
  • The weather, most notably humidity, if the weather is humid, especially during summer, there is a good chance that you will have an oily scalp.
  • Vitamin B deficiency.
  • Using too much conditioner.
  • Pollution.
  • Untreated dandruff.
  • Not washing your hair enough.

 Here are some natural home remedies to help treat smelly and oily scalps.

  1. Mix 1 part baking soda with 3 parts water. Apply it on your damp hair, wait 5 minutes and then rinse your hair. Repeat once or twice a month.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda to your regular shampoo bottle and use it to wash your hair 1 or 2 times a week.
  3. You can also use baking soda as a dry shampoo. For light colored hair, thoroughly mix equal amounts of baking soda and cornstarch, while those with dark colored hair, thoroughly mix equal amounts of baking soda and cocoa powder. Sprinkle a small amount at the roots of your hair and tousle your hair around. Brush your hair thoroughly with a good quality brush and you will be impressed with the result.

 

✧Treats Stained or Yellow Nails✧

Putting on nail polish can make your hands look elegant and beautiful but what happens after can be the problem. Nail polish can sometimes stain the nails, giving it a yellowish color. This unsightly nails can be quite embarrassing. But with the help of some natural home remedies made with baking soda, you will no longer have to hide your hands in your pocket or with gloves.

Baking soda has a bleaching and exfoliating property which can help remove stains and whiten your nails. Using these treatments can help you achieve stain-free nails.

  1. Put 1 tablespoon baking soda, ½ cup of water, and 1 teaspoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide in a small bowl. Stir well, until the baking soda dissolves. Dip your nails into the solution for 2 to 3 minutes. Repeat once every two weeks.
  2. Make a paste using 2½ tablespoons of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Use a cotton swab to apply it on your nails. Wait for 2 minutes before rinsing your nails with warm water. Repeat once every 2 months for best results.

 

✧Treats Nail Fungus✧

Onychomycosis or also known as nail fungus is a common infection that causes your nails to develop white or yellow spots under the tip of your fingernails.  As the fungal infection becomes worse, the fungal infection goes deeper, this may cause your nails to discolor, thicken, and crumble at the nail's edge.

Here are some remedies to help you treat nail fungus.

  1. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 1 cup of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Soak the affected toenails or fingernails in this solution for 5 minutes. Pat your nails dry with paper towels. Do this twice a day.
  2. Mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of baking soda with warm water to make a paste. Apply it on your affected nails for 10 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. Repeat once daily.

 

✧Helps Heals Skin Rashes and Itchiness✧

Rashes and itchiness might not be a serious problem, but they can cause a lot of discomforts. With the help of baking soda, you can treat this problem. Baking soda has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe your skin, reducing inflammations, itching, and swelling.

  1. For more specific areas, make a paste consisting of 1 part water with 3 parts baking soda. Apply the paste on the affected area. Allow it to sit for a couple of minutes, then rinse it off with cool water. Use this treatment once daily, until the condition improves.
  2. To make a baking soda bath, add 1 cup of baking soda to a bathtub of cool water and soak in it for 10 minutes a day.
