What is Listening?

Listening is the process of getting information what we hear. Listening is different from hearing,

                    

in hearing we didn’t focus on what the person is saying but in listening we focus our full attention to the speaker.

What is the purposes of listening ?

Listening has many types of purposes:

  1. To get information

Listening is a most wonderful tool to get information. A child learns how to speak through listening. We get extra information in less time through listening.

Every day we learn many new thing through listening.

  1. To analyze the message:

A message contains either fact or opinion. Fact is a thing that is accepted by everyone and no one can challenge it, it is also called reality.

Opinion is the personal point of view of a person. The purpose of listening is not to accept a thing blindly. We can analyze by listing others opinions/views.

  1. To be inspired

The management speeches are made for highly inspiring to workers.

They motivate to the workers for doing their best.

  1. To improve communication skill

Listen provides a good opportunity to improve our communication skills.

So, we should attend meetings, and meet people who are good in speaking.

Barriers in effective listening

People listen at only 25% efficiency. Why this is happened?

some reasons are as Following:

  1. Selfish behavior

The biggest problem in listening is that most of the time we think about ourselves. We thought about ourselves, we won’t to stop that person who is speaking.

                                           

In this type of situation everyone speaks and no one listens.

  1. Prejudice

Prejudice means having opposed feelings against speaker. People often see who is speaking. They ignored what is being said.

They reject the speech just because they do not like the person who is speaking.

  1. Distractions

Distractions block the way of listening. Distractions may be internal or external. External distractions includes noise, weather problems, glaring light etc.

                                  

Internal distractions include daydreaming, nervous habits, stress etc.

  1. Thinking speed

The speed of thinking four times faster than the speaking. This difference between speeds may divert the attention of the listener.

                                   

It is most popular blocking way of listening.

  1. Prejudgment

Very often people jump to the conclusions. Without giving the speaker time they arrive at the end.

             

Then they are no more in the mood of getting information.

  1. Poor delivery

Poor delivery leaves the people to get bored and uninterested. shouting can also harm the delivery purpose.

                                   

A monotone can send the listeners to sleep. Bad pronunciation can annoys the audience.
